poplar leaves against the deep sky
splashed out like stains of wine
as if to describe
what happened last night

from the wells
of bitter-sweet memory
leaning like blue notes
we found comfort in the maze
veering off the road
roaring through the plains

in the setting sun
the breeze, the smoke rising
